New Puppy Essentials - The Recommended Starter Shopping List
Getting a new puppy is an exciting adventure, but it also starts with the responsibility of some preparatory purchases. From food and fun toys to essential grooming tools and training equipment, these purchases ensure your puppy's well-being and make the transition smoother for both of you. Being well-prepared ensures that you start off on the right paw and are able to provide the love and care your new puppy deserves from day one.
Here is a list of 15 things that we think should be considered essential items to get you started:
Food and Water Bowls: Stainless steel - it is durable, easy to clean, and won’t harbor bacteria like plastic might.
High-Quality Dog Food: Choose a nutritious dog food appropriate for your dog's age, size, and breed - check with your breeder and vet to see what makes the most sense.
Collar, Harness, and ID Tag: A collar with an identification tag that includes your contact information is crucial in case your dog gets lost - simple is best, nothing too dangly because you don’t want it to get caught on something and cause injury to your new pup. A harness - to prevent choking and injury to the dog while learning how to leash-walk.
Leash: A leash for walking and training your dog, preferably a 6-foot one (to start). You’ll end up with a few more later on because your pup may end up chewing through it at some point. Look for a brand that comes with a guarantee - such as Lupine Pet! (They claim : They will replace any Lupine Pet brand dog collars, leashes or pet gear, from your original purchase, that has been accidentally damaged during normal pet-related activities, even chewing accidents!)
Crate or Dog Bed: A comfortable and safe space for your dog to rest and sleep. (Tip: save the dog bed for once they are over their destructive chewing phase… we went through 2 with Mila before she got through her puppy phase, use towels instead because it’s easier to clean up messes and toss in the wash.)
Toys: Provide toys for mental stimulation and physical exercise. Chew toys, balls, and interactive toys are great options. Make sure to find toys with different textures, noises, and functions so that your pup can be exposed to different things early on.
Grooming Supplies: Depending on your dog's coat, you may need brushes, combs, shampoo, and nail clippers.
Poop Bags: For cleaning up after your dog during walks.
Dog License and Registration: Ensure you have all the necessary paperwork and that your dog is properly registered with local authorities.
Training Treats: Regular and High-value treats to aid in training and positive reinforcement. We love these and stick to them because our dogs have never had problems with them: Zuke’s Mini Naturals Soft Dog Treats, Old Mother Hubbard by Wellness Training Bitz.
Pet Insurance: Consider getting pet insurance to help cover unexpected vet bills. (Check out our post about pet insurance here!)
Veterinarian Care: Find a local vet and schedule a wellness checkup for your new dog.
Flea and Tick Prevention: Depending on your location, you may need preventive treatments - ask your vet about it.
Training Bag: Something that you can wear on your body, that keeps all your dog walking and training tools all in place (treats, poop bags, clicker, etc.).
Love and Patience: Most importantly, your new dog will need your time, attention, and affection.
Remember that the specific needs of your dog may vary depending on their breed, age, and individual characteristics. It's a good idea to consult with your veterinarian, breeder/rescue, and experienced dog owners to tailor your supplies and care to your dog's unique requirements.
Goodluck and have sooo much fun building a bond like no other!
