Pet Insurance - Care that’s more than love
When Mila came home with us, we were told we had to bring her to the vet within the first several days. So we made a vet appointment for the very next day. We knew that having a new friend like Mila was going to bring us so much joy but that there would be a cost to keeping her happy, healthy, and well cared for - we wanted to be prepared.
While we were at the vet, we were trying to figure out how many more times we would have to bring her back in the first year alone for her immunizations, spay, and etc. - and how much that would cost over the course of her lifetime. Thankfully, they had a new puppy package, which made sense for us to get based on the coverage, the value, and considering her age. For a reasonable monthly fee, we were able to get all her check ups, vaccinations, spay, and certain tests covered - we did the math and opted in.
In addition to the package, she was able to be microchipped and got pet insurance for a brief period of time which was nice.
In all honestly, I think we let her pet insurance lapse because we forgot that the trial ended (oops!). When we realized it was time to renew, it was too late and we had to start with a fresh policy. Learn from our mistakes, stay on top of it!
Regardless, it gave us a chance to shop around and see else was available. After a bunch of back and forth, we decided it would be best for us to go back to using Trupanion.
We knew by then, we would be investing our savings into Mila, her care, and wellbeing . It only made sense to make sure if anything ever happened to her, we would be able to afford her health and medical needs.
Here are some of the top reasons why getting pet insurance felt like a wise decision for us:
1. Peace of Mind from Day One
Getting pet insurance for your puppy means you can enjoy peace of mind from the very beginning. You'll be prepared for any unexpected medical expenses that may arise, knowing that your pup's health is safeguarded.
2. Puppies Are Prone to Accidents
Puppies are curious and full of boundless energy, which can sometimes lead to accidents. Whether it's a slip and fall, an unexpected swallow of a foreign object, or a playful mishap at the park, having pet insurance ensures you're financially covered when accidents happen.
3. Coverage for Hereditary Conditions
Certain breeds are more prone to hereditary conditions, and it's essential to be proactive in addressing potential health issues. Many pet insurance plans cover hereditary conditions, which can be a lifesaver as your puppy grows into adulthood.
4. Vaccinations and Preventive Care
Puppyhood is a crucial time for vaccinations and preventive care to protect your dog against common diseases. Some pet insurance companies covers these costs, ensuring your pup receives the best care right from the start. (Trupanion does not, but we had a new puppy care package from our vet clinic that started us off with a Trupanion trial. Additionally, Trupanion’s model made more sense for us despite not providing coverage for expected expenses.)
5. Coverage for Chronic Conditions
Chronic health issues can develop in dogs of all ages, including puppies. Having insurance in place means you won't have to face the heart-wrenching choice between your pup's health and your finances if chronic conditions arise.
6. Emergency Situations
Life is unpredictable, and emergencies can happen at any time. Whether it's a late-night visit to the emergency vet or a sudden illness, pet insurance provides financial support in those urgent situations.
7. Financial Flexibility
Pet insurance plans come in various forms, allowing you to choose coverage that fits your budget and your pup's needs. You can select from different deductibles, coverage limits, and premium options, tailoring the plan to your financial situation.
8. Avoiding Tough Choices
One of the most compelling reasons to get pet insurance while your dog is still a puppy is to avoid the heartbreaking dilemma of choosing between your pet's health and your financial stability. With insurance, you can make decisions based on what's best for your puppy's well-being.
9. Access to Quality Healthcare
Having pet insurance enables you to provide the best possible healthcare for your puppy. You can choose your preferred veterinarians and specialists without worrying about cost constraints.
10. Lifetime Coverage
By insuring your puppy early, you may get a lower premium rate and secure coverage for the duration of your pet's life. This means your furry family member can enjoy a lifetime of protection.
Pet insurance for your puppy is an investment in their well-being, offering peace of mind, financial security, and the opportunity to provide the best possible care throughout their life. There was another freak accident a year or two later where Mila fractured a tooth from getting her collar stuck in a floor vent, yanking up the floor vent and then getting smacked in the face with it…
That was super scary for all of us, we thought she was fine because she shook it off and rebounded pretty quickly, but it took us nearly a week to realize she was behaving more lethargic and withdrawn since she was still willing to play ball… it broke our hearts when we realized she was not her self because she was in pain. In the end Mila got the care that she needed and it was a blessing to have the insurance in our back pockets! We also learned from that experience that for our own peace of mind if something weird happens, we usually do a full body and dental scan to see if we can illicit any pain or aversive behavior to determine if they are okay or need extra attention sooner rather than later…
Next time something strange or unpredictable happens, we know we’ll be covered by our care packages and pet insurance 💙
