The reason why we got a Corgi.
My husbands childhood dog was a massive golden retriever named Nomar.
I grew up never having a dog, but always wishing for one. The closest I ever got to owning a dog, was a bunny I had as a young child. (Side bar: I do not recommend ever getting a young child a pet of any kind. Unless it’s a goldfish, maybe…).
So, what do you get when you cross a golden retriever with a black and white bunny? In our case, you get a corgi!
All jokes aside, a major deciding factor was our living situation at the time. We were renting an apartment and the lease agreement actually said we were not allowed to have pets in the apartment. When we asked our land lord about it, he was kind enough to add an addendum to our lease agreement with very little convincing required. The agreement stipulated that we were allowed to have ONE dog, no larger than 30 pounds.
Hubs wanted a big dog that was super friendly, playful, and energetic. A companion that he could take with him almost anywhere to adventure with.
I wanted a large dog of the working variety, one that was intelligent and tenacious. A companion I could bond with and train.
Life had other plans for us. After much research, we landed on a corgi since “they are basically a big dog, trapped in a little dog body!”
Our hearts grew 10x bigger the day we brought Mila home.
I started training with her immediately.
Hubs was over the moon playing with a new pup.
By 4-5 months, Mila knew how to sit, stay, come, and leave it. She would occasionally make mistakes, but for a fresh pup - we were pretty impressed! She was crate trained in less than a week.
We played ball in the hallway. Sitting only 5 feet away from each other (she’s got little legs after all…), we would play monkey in the middle with her and a toy. I think that’s when the fetch addiction started.
One of the hardest thing for us to figure out was potty training. Since she was so short and small, we couldn’t tell if she was squatting or sitting… On top of that, we lived in the second story and would have to carry her downstairs (more on this later!).
Overall, considering what we wanted and what parameters we were given to work with… I would say that Hubs and I got the best of both worlds. We got everything we both were searching for in a compact package!
